Functional Neurology

Functional Neurology, also known as Chiropractic neurology, is a systems based approach founded by Professor Fredrick Carrick. Functional neurology is based on several key health domains, including neuron physiology, biochemistry, neuroscience principles with the incorporation of nutrition, pharmacology, immunology and detoxification in order to induce positive plasticity, create adaptation through many levels of the nervous system and to maintain its integrity and functioning.

For decades, it was thought that the brain did not change after neuro-development had occurred. The Neuroscience literature has proven that the brain is able to change, adapt and learn throughout the course of one’s entire lifespan, despite brain injury or a disease process. This ability of the brain to change in structure and function is referred to as neuroplasticity.

Functional Neurology uses neuroscience-based rehabilitation principles aimed to manipulate the pathways and connection of specific areas of the nervous system.

Activation of the brain positively influences multiple neurotransmitter systems and promotes not only new connections within the brain and spinal cord, but also leads to the creation of new neurons and blood vessels in the brain and spinal cord.

Understanding the specific pathways of the spinal cord, brainstem and brain and the interpretation of examination findings allow specific individualized variety of interventions to positively alter brain functioning.

Information provided through the patients’ detailed health and medical history, the results of a complete thorough examination, and the objective data synthesized by our advanced diagnostic equipment provide us with a detailed and nuanced scope reflecting the state of our patients’ nervous system. We use this information to create a specific treatment plan designed to enhance brain function. We combine visual, auditory, vestibular, proprioceptive, movement-based, and cognitive activities to promote neuroplasticity and well-being.
